Chapter Programs
Tech Counselors

An EAA Technical Counselor is an experienced volunteer advisor who shares knowledge and expertise to aircraft builders. These Technical Counselors are part of the "member helping member" tradition of EAA. They advise builders on constructing a safe, airworthy aircraft for final FAA inspection. These volunteers, who offer their services at no charge, are at least one of the following:

  • Have built an experimental category aircraft
  • Have restored an antique/classic aircraft
  • Hold an A&P, IA, DAR, DER or Aerospace Engineer rating in the U.S., an equivalent international rating or have the qualifications for those ratings
  • In the case of an ultralight Technical Counselor, have experience and ability to provide technical assistance to ultralight aircraft builders.

These volunteers visit projects and advise builders on how to comply with building instructions and federal regulations. Technical Counselors offer tips based on their experience and help builders avoid costly mistakes. Through Technical Counselors, EAA helps maintain the excellent reputation of the amateur-built program. Members are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this valuable program. These are people who have "been there" and can help you get over the hurdles, coach you on techniques, or just be another pair of eyes to make sure critical mistakes are avoided. Following is a list of our chapter's Technical Counselors:

  • Dan Benua 503-702-5387 danbenuayahoo.com, RV-6A & RV-10 builder, Hillsboro-Portland area
  • Joe Blank 503-784-9755 jblank6gmail.com, RV-6 & Taylorcraft builder, Molalla-Portland area
  • John Cox 503-684-6001 johnwcoxpacificnw.com, RV-10 & Lancair, A&P/IA, Portland area
  • Tom Sampson 503-590-6575 thomas.e.sampsoncomcast.net, RV-9A and RV-7 builder, Portland Area
  • Jake Thiessen 503-606-0569 jaknjoanminetfiber.com, multiple RV builder, Independence-Salem area
  • Don Wentz 503-543-3653 dasduckcomcast.net, RV-6 builder, Scappoose-Portland area

Flight Advisors
EAA Flight Advisors are EAA member-volunteers who can help you prepare for the first flight of your new aircraft. They will provide guidlelines that can help the decision about who should make the first flight in your plane and also craft a proper first flight and test phase plan. If you need more instruction in a certain type of airplane, a Flight Advisor can help you find it. If you choose to have a test pilot fly your airplane instead, a Flight Advisor can help you find and evaluate other pilots. Flight Advisors also have the resources of EAA available to assist you. Following is a list of our chapter's Flight Advisors:
  • Mike Seager 503-429-5103 hm, 503-429-1562 hangar, rv6cfihotmail.com
  • Tom Sampson 503-590-6575 thomas.e.sampsoncomcast.net, RV-9A and RV-7 builder, Portland Area
Young Eagles

The Young Eagle flight program, a program of the EAA Aviation Foundation, is designed to provide young people with an introductory experience to aviation with the hope that they will consider it as a career or personal interest. The members of Chapter 105 are very committed to the goals of The Young Eagle Flight program and have activities planned each year to this end.

If you would like more information, or would like to arrange an airplane ride for a young boy or girl, please visit the National EAA Young Eagles web site or contact the Chapter 105 Young Eagle Coordinator listed on the Contacts page. Other information, including the Young Eagles Logbook, can be found at www.youngeagles.org.

Tool Crib

One valuable benefit of Chapter 105 membership is access to the group's tools. The chapter has built up a nice collection of tools of the kind that most builders/flyers only need once or occasionally, but that can come in really handy when you do need them.

Terms of Use: (Please Read!)
Use of the Chapter 105 tools is a members-only benefit. Tools are for use by members who are current builders or owners, for use on an aircraft that they themselves are performing work on. Members must be current Chapter 105 members (not expired) when checking out tools. Again, these tools are for YOUR use only, not your non-member pals.

Anyone checking out tools will be expected to take proper care of them. Return them clean. If broken, repair before returning, or discuss it with the toolmeister; don't just turn it in and assume it's his job to fix it. Do not pass tools on to other members without first clearing it with the toolmeister.

TOOLMEISTER: Mike McGee, 503-701-6315 (cell), mmcgee@pma-engr.com

Tune-up & annual kit - Compression checker, mag timing light, timing dial, mag adjustment tool, plug gapper, high voltage cable tester, and plug vibrator cleaner. Click here for annual inspection procedures/usage document [MS word .doc file]

Champion spark plug abrasive cleaner and tester - Usually goes with the tune-up & annual kit, above.

Brake lining rivet set - Tool to remove and replace rivets in brake linings.

Oil filter cutter - Custom make by Stan V.

Wing Jacks (2) -Works for all models except RV-3

Engine hoist — Just the thing for hanging your engine. Contact the Toolmeister to arrange to borrow it.

Wire crimping tool & die - For large gauge wires (e.g. battery leads)

Aircraft scales — accurately weigh your beast and also determine CG.

Tire balancer — Located in chapter hangar G1, take your wheels in and balance them there.
Tire bead breaker — Located in the chapter hangar G1, take your wheels in and break those stubborn beads, then you can balance them. Bring your own wrenches for splitting your wheels, no hand tools available there

HVLP paint sprayer -Turbine type. Includes gun and air turbine.

Instrument hole template - For instrument panel mounting screw holes.

Cylinder base wrenches

Vacuum pump wrench — Remove/replace those pesky nuts that are buried around the back side of the pump next to the magneto.

Prop Balancing

Chapter 105 board is pleased to offer a significant program for members: a state-of-the-art propeller balancing system. The Chapter has purchased a Dynamic Solutions Systems MicroVib™ II Aircraft Analyzer to add to our already robust Tool Crib program. Learn more about prop balancing, and this system in particular, at their web site.

Here's how the program works:

  • For Chapter 105 members and their personal aircraft ONLY.
  • A $20 fee will be assessed for each balance job. The money is to be used both for consumable supplies (weights, tape, etc.) and a reserve fund for calibration, repairs, or updates we will need over the years.
  • Managed and supervised exclusively by the Balance Meister: Bruce Rose.
  • The member assumes all responsibility/liability (the Balance Meister is only assisting YOU, as you balance your prop while he operates the equipment).

So!  If you are not a member of EAA and Chapter 105, you cannot take advantage
of this amazing program.  Best join up and contact Bruce Rose to set up an appointment.  503-848-2228 or brucefalcondesign.com.
